The Mill collaborated with Biscuit Filmworks’ Director Andreas Nilsson and Venables Bell & Partners for the latest Reebok commercial starring Cardi B. The comedic spot sees the rapper finding a unique way to tie the laces on her sneakers.
The spot sees Cardi B at a beauty salon, where the entire salon freezes upon noticing that her sneakers are untied. Cardi’s pink nails slowly extend out and slither down her leg to tie her shoelace.
John Leonti, Creative Director explains, “One of the challenges was staying true to the amazing nail designs by Jenny Bui, including the placement of specific stones and jewels, and interpreting them into nails that would ultimately be around three-foot-long. Figuring out how they would come out of her hands, and how they would move in a sensualbut realistic way, took a lot of iterations.”
Wes, Creative Director adds, “Real life super long nails can look quite odd, so it was important for the animation team to work on the shape and look that the long nails form, to ensure they remained attractive. Animation tests started out snake-like but then developed into the more rigid form they have in the final film.”
Jason Mortimer, VFX Lead Artist states, “Our design team worked with editorial to set the direction and pacing of the fingernails. Meanwhile we were busy modeling and texturing the CG fingernails to look exactly like the ones that Cardi's nail artist designed. From there, we had the animation team rig the nails and work on how they would move.”
