The director Peter Thwaites likes his ads to develop naturally from an essentially good idea: rather like the famous Guinness surge recreated in this multi-storey spectacular, in which lights flicker on and off to replicate the stout as it foams, bubbles, and settles into the distinctive, creamy, black-and-white pint.

The lights were animated and reworked, and a few storeys added to the building to achieve just the right swirl of creamy stout. Using footage of a real pint of Guinness for reference, Jordi Bares and Andi Nicholas worked with 30 frames of light patterns, created in Shake by Becky Porter, and 16,000 textures in Houdini to create the lighting movements. Finally, Adam Scott created a smooth realistic grade in telecine and enhanced the overall effect. The light-switching was edited to a soundtrack by Rick Russell from Final Cut.
