Mill+ Director KAM makes her Music Video directional debut, for Caggie Dunlop's I Wish You Knew.
Inspired by Dunlop’s lyrics ‘So I pretend, this is going to be the last time.’ We see Caggie’s recurring struggle with herself and her relationship showcased on screen, as she tells herself again and again - that she won't be back.
Despite filming on an Arri Alexa Mini, Director KAM was eager to convey a nostalgic film look, equipped with rich colour and a textured grain, it was the job of Colourist Thomas Mangham to achieve this. Mangham says that: “Due to the single shot technique used during filming, It was certainly a challenge matching some of the footage due to the sudden changes of lighting when passing windows. Through the use of dynamic grade techniques and key frames the transitioned felt more balanced.”
With the singer enthused by a single shot concept, the next step was the challenging execution. KAM states: ‘Technically speaking, the concept was a bit of a risk, we didn’t have the budget for a motion control rig - so it was the job of our DP Tristian Chenais, equipped with a ronin, to capture this all in one take.’
Capturing the music video in one take was challenging and required KAM to build the set to scale in 3D in order to calculate positional timings which were subsequently communicated to 1st and 2nd AD’s Sam Barnham and Jo Guthrie.
