Taking place in Bolt’s not-so-secret hideout on a mountain, the spot explores the power of Virgin’s smart WiFi, which is represented via CG red energy that flows around the room, interacting with all the smart appliances (including the famous Bolt Signal).
Shoot Supervisor and 2D Lead Artist Andrew ‘Barnsley’ Wood explains ‘Shot at Power Studios over two days, our work on the spot was threefold. First we created the CG particles which make up the ‘red energy’ coming from the box, as the WiFi signal finds the objects and optimises them; Then there was a series of monitors, one of which is an AI-style touchscreen panel which was created using screen graphics; and finally we had to create the illusion that flames were coming out Usain Bolt’s jetpack as he flew across the sky, as well as add in the blasts of gas when he takes off. Matte painting was also used to create the secret lair on top of the rocky mountain and to add a Bolt Signal in the sky.’
