To create the 'big sexy world' The Mill's VFX team used a combination of CG layers and matte paintings to seamlessly craft an entire photo real CG earth. In order to establish the accuracy of the earth and transitions from space to earth in one shot, the Mill's team paid special attention to city lights and land textures by studying footage from NASA and the ISS.
