Damien Van Der Cruyssen, Colourist and Director of DI at The Mill NY collaborated with Director of Photography Adam Newport-Berra for Andra Day's recent cover of Billie Holiday's 'Strange Fruit'.
The film, shot on 35mm is part of a a larger storytelling project about the legacy of racial injustice in America. Throughout the film we see inserts of nature and wholesome environments whereas some of these places are historical sites of the worst crimes in American history.
Damien was able to work closely with Adam despite remote sessions between New York and San Francisco. Using the 35mm stills captured by Adam on set for reference, Adam and Damien then worked to establish the final look. Damien comments, "We wanted to find a good balance between the very dark studio performance and the exterior shots."
The film aims to raise awareness of the racial injustices and crimes committed over the years. If you would like to learn about the initiative further, check out the Equal Justice Initiative.
