The Mill teamed up with Deutsch and Director Noam Murro of Biscuit Filmworks to craft a fully CG gorilla-balloon that launches the campaign for Volkswagen’s all-new Tiguan in ‘The New King’. The piece caricatures one of film’s most iconic duos as the larger-than-life creature finally meets his match.
The helium-filled beast trails the glamorous vehicle through the city; floating over bridges, bumping into water towers until finally landing on top of the epic Empire State Building, coming face-to-face with “The New King of the Concrete Jungle.”
To maintain the appropriate sense of scale for the balloon hero, The Mill’s artists had to pay close attention to the scale of the creases, the dirt, and layers of grime on the gorilla. Modeling & Texturing Supervisor Kathryn Dougan says, “I had to put myself at the scene and reason out what types of weathering, dirt, and sun damage this guy would be subjected to, living on the roof of a car dealership.”
The artists also utilized matte painting to further illustrate the vast cityscape.
