These Series 1 artists also feature in the colorful spot, seeing a city transformed by a storm that turns everything the rain touches into their bright, colorful art. Greg Spencer, VFX Supervisor and 2D Lead Artist speaks about The Mill's process, "When we first for the brief from Hustle we loved the artist focused approach. While technically we knew what we were doing in terms of applying artwork to buildings, the real challenge was to stay faithful to the work artistically. The main problem was, how does the artwork resolve itself? As with most things we do here we soon discovered that using as much of the footage that was caught in camera is always a brilliant starting point. We began using the real rain that was caught on the shoot to reveal the art underneath, almost like real life had been painted over these beautiful works of art. When we had finessed this technique we began pushing it further and further, using a mixture of various cloud tank elements, indian ink shot on white card, 3D elements and old fashion frame by frame painting to reveal the images. To finish it off we added CGI rain, splashes to the ground and in short pulled out all the stops to make sure the spot was as beautiful as it could possibly be. As an artist is was a real joy to be able to draw on so may techniques to create the final film, the fun we had playing around with them really shines through."
David Hemsptead, 3D Lead Artist explain, "Since this was LIFEWTR's first Super Bowl commercial, the goal was to have a strong impact with dramatic and colorful visuals that would represent the artistry LIFEWTR stands for and supports. We managed to find a perfect balance between retaining the integrity of the original footage and integrating it with the colourful rain droplets that build into whole pictures." Robert Holmes, 3D Artist continues, "This was a dream project to be part of. LIFEWTR really put the art and creativity centre stage. Stromberg crafted a beautifully shot film, designed to showcase the incredible work of each artist. The cityscapes, quiet neighborhoods and bustling streets were the perfect canvas for their creations, accompanied by a great score. We never stopped pushing creatively and with every iteration we found more and more magic in the art's urban takeover."
The colorful grade was crafted by Matt Osborne who embedded the vibrant artwork with a natural palette to compliment and carefully balance the images.
The global superstar and multiple-award-winner John Legend is featured with an inspired version of his hit single, “Love Me Now,” that’s been tailored to reflect the advertisement’s art direction and bring its imagery to life.
The artists featured in Series 1 are Craig & Karl, MOMO and Jason Woodside.
