‘Zeke the Dirtbag Razor’ makes his Big Game debut for Super Bowl 50, continuing Dollar Shave Club’s ‘Don’t Shave with a Crusty Razor’ campaign in collaboration with The Mill and Director Aaron Stoller of Biscuit Filmworks.
Meet Zeke, a new Dollar Shave Club character with a filthy mouth (among other things). This rowdy razor was created using a variety of real razors as reference so artists at The Mill could build him in CG.
3D Lead Artist Tom Graham comments, “Texturing these razors was really fun. Dollar Shave Club wanted us to include as much grime as possible, so we used fine displacement on the razor heads to get a nice crusty look to resemble dried up shaving cream. It was nice to have the opportunity to render a few close up shots to show off some of the great texture work that was done on these characters.”
While it was important to fill the otherwise inanimate objects with character and personality, the artists had to use very subtle movements in order to maintain a realistic quality in the razor heads. They found that focusing on the lower ‘lip’ of the razors allowed the characters to clearly annunciate each word.
