Mill Colourist Seamus O’Kane and 2D Lead Gareth Brannan worked closely with Academy’s Niall O’Brien to bring the intensity of the Foals' ‘What Went Down’ promo to life.
The ferocious film stages two high-octane scenes - the first sees a girl swimming ahead of two others, the second features a grim bare-chested man, and a fearsome dog. The tension builds, unbearably, slowly but surely until we’re offered up a final twist.
Seamus comments, "Working with Niall is always such a great experience. His visual composition is so finely tuned that his mixture of precision and energy is bound to produce striking imagery.
In this piece the drama of the chase is intercut with the powerful performance which is all in turn balanced against the inevitable consequence of the attack. The anticipation of the results is finely drawn out throughout which gives the whole piece a dynamic purpose.
Niall chose to use 16mm film to capture the action with a rawness that cuts through the blandness of contemporary images and gives a refreshingly real feel."
Gareth Brannan adds, "I was excited about getting involved in this project from the moment I heard the idea, which paved the way for the use of strong visuals and had the potential to be a really stand out piece. Niall really captured an amazing performance from the band as well as embodying the film with a gritty intensity.
I really loved being involved in this project as it was both fun and challenging. For the dog attack scene it was imperitive that we filmed all the plates perfectly to enable us to make a really tight composite that would make people believe this man was in real danger."
