The Academy Awards®
The Academy underwent a rebrand this year, with Richard Harrington and his design team at 180LA developing a new visual identity and brand direction. Emran explained how they used this as a platform from which to extend in their animation designs: "We used the beam of light as our visual icon. The beam is significant in three ways; on a practical level it acts as the projector beam, it's representative of the heroic aspect and finally it evokes the idea of a performer stepping out onto a grand stage."
When discussing the design within the live theatrical experience, Emran added; "I enjoyed the glass Oscar statues which extend the visuals on stage, creating an iconic look. Instead of using gold or bronze, we wanted them to be translucent so that the glass produced a mirror effect."
As well as designing custom nomination posters, Mill+ had the honor of taking on this year's In Memoriam sequence. "For this sequence, we wanted to showcase an emotional journey with a pace and rhythm that would carry us from one memory to the next," Emran explained. "We chose ink as our medium, which allowed for a delicate aesthetic as well as creating fluent and organic transitions."
The 2014 ceremony was beautiful and it was a fantastic achievement to see our Mill+ work live during the Oscars for a third year in a row.
