This spot sees a trio of young explorers and their animated pals as they trek through the jungle in search of adventure., eventually switching to an in-game point of view. Lines and Proctor spoke to us about their experience shooting on location in Costa Rica while the rest of the team worked simultaneously in our LA studio.
Proctor explains: "Nick and I put together a treatment for the Hoenn Region - the environment within the game. We bid a number of different locations and Costa Rica was ultimately chosen. We spent the first of two weeks there looking for the perfect area - it needed an epic vista landscape, beach, jungle and cliff - and we eventually came across one spot in the northwest region that had all of those. Once we had the perfect spot, we built a bunch of props. For the large flying Pokémon, for example, we used a gimbal rig positioned on a spring so the crew could puppeteer it. We built that directly in the jungle and shot the sequence on blue screen. The other element was showing one of the boys jumping off the cliff without actually having him jump (it was a 100-ft. drop)! So it was all about shooting with the right camera angles, in addition to building a fake cliff for the low angle shot where he jumps."
Lines and Proctor remained in constant communication with the team in LA in order to create the perfect environment. Lines comments: "We previs'd the whole spot prior to arriving in Costa Rica. Once we got there we took some photos and sent them back to CG here in LA who then adjusted the previs based on the photos. Another challenge was matching the lighting between the natural light on set and the additions we added in post - the CG characters, the matte painting for the volcano in the background. We then got to edit in-house with Nate Park - he was really good. It was great that we got to do our own cut. Once the edit was done, Greg [Reese] graded in-house. All post was done here."
According to Proctor, amidst coordinating with LA, directing a group of 13-year-olds and building multiple props, the biggest challenge of shooting on location had everything to do with Mother Nature.
"It was the rainy season," Proctor recalls. "So at 2:00 p.m. every afternoon, torrential downpour came down on us. We had to bid a slightly longer shooting schedule. And we had killer early mornings because the sun rose at five in the morning! Up at 3:30, on set by 4:00."
Early bird gets the Pokémon. Well done!
